Bulky and strong, commando isopods are built tough with sturdy legs and powerful bodies. Although many isopods burrow, commando isopods take it to the next level: in the wild, they dig deep burrows in beach sand above the tide line. Despite their proximity to salt water, they do not seem to require it and certainly reproduce without standing water. In captivity, they will construct similar structures provided the substrate is compactable and deep enough. Amusingly, they will often sit near the entrance to the burrow, antennae out and sensing for food. Their coloration is very appealing, lending additional credence to the commando moniker with olive green camo patterning and white and yellow highlights.
