When the air in my enclosures dries out from winter furnace heat, the dog food pellets come alive. Not with mold or mites, but with hundreds of shimmering blue-grey springtails. The damp grain springtail thrives in conditions that would desiccate other species quickly. This is the perfect springtail species for dry bio-active enclosures. When kept with tropical pinks, the two will partition themselves based on the moisture; a piece of bark from the wet end will be swarmed entirely with tropical pinks and one from the dry end will have strictly damp grains. This species does not do well with humid air and usually crashes in summer when the ambient humidity rises, but always returns when proper conditions arise.
