The classic hide beetle is the species of choice for skeleton cleaning and has been used for hundreds of years by taxidermists to clean skulls and other bones. It is perhaps the most effective consumer of dead roaches in large feeder colonies and is an important component in the integrated management of potential colony pests like scuttle flies. However, if they run out of dead roaches, they will begin feeding on grain-based roach foods, and it is possible that they may snack on molting roaches if nothing else is available!
