Humongous isopods are well-deserving of their namesake; fully grown individuals may be the largest fully terrestrial isopods! This species is found in Spain, Portugal, and even northern Morocco. It is possible that disjunct populations may be separate species, or perhaps introductions. The similar Porcellio sp. “Sevilla” may be a subspecies of hoffmannseggii, but this is currently being tested. In captivity the humongous isopod requires more ventilation and higher average temperatures than most others; stuffy conditions will result in premature deaths of larger individuals. They do well with typical isopod foods such as a fruits, vegetables, dog food, and abundant quality leaf litter; larger individuals in particular ravenously consume humus. Although it is marketed with a variety of different spellings, the correct (and humorously convoluted) spelling is hoffmannseggii.
