Perhaps the most famous cockroach, the American roach is found across the globe. It is a resilient species, having spread far beyond its believed origins in northern Africa (though its scientific and common names would lead you to believe it came from elsewhere!) Undoubtedly, most people have had at least one bad encounter with one of these creatures, making way for a lifetime of cockroach loathing. However, it should be noted that the American cockroach, unlike the German cockroach, is not a malevolent indoor pest. In fact, most American roaches wander into human structures and do not persistently breed there. It is only when sufficient materials for breeding (the crumbs you left on the floor for several weeks, the leaky faucet you didn’t fix, or that bag of trash your son “forgot” to take out) accumulate that the American cockroach can become a pest. In a way, it is nature’s harbinger of a messy house. Hence, it is my opinion that American cockroach should be valued for its adaptability and thanked for encouraging us to thoroughly (and crazily) clean our homes.
