Despite the numerous gigantic, lush-looking roaches that I own, I find starting cultures of smaller species to be more satisfying than establishing their larger counterparts. From the get-go, the bilunate roach was a strong producer; before mixing in additional bloodlines, my entire colony of several hundred roaches consisted of a single adult female and her progeny. This species has quickly become one of my favorite small feeders; the nymphs cannot climb and the newborns are smaller than pinhead crickets. The adults are good fliers and climbers but this species cultures well in small containers with low ventilation (i.e., no escape holes!). They require a rich, organic substrate to reproduce well; nymphs do not burrow but will hide under leaf and moss fragments, which also provide them additional nourishment.
