Although my initial experience with this species was that it was quite tricky, I have since acquired a different strain that is much more vigorous than my previous one. They produce many egg cases but require heat, a humid retreat for egg laying, and drier upper levels to thrive. The nymphs hatch out reddish brown but change to a beautiful red as they grow, eventually gaining their incredible, namesake harlequin pattern a few molts before adulthood. Although the adults produce distasteful compounds, the nymphs are safe to use as occasional feeders. Though the nymphs are skittish, adults handle fairly well.
