Collector Ben Senigaglia found a handful of these intriguing roaches in the duff at the bottom of a rotting tree, giving them the endearing moniker “stump roaches”. About a year later, Mt. Ord was ablaze with wildfires. As if that were not punishment enough, the following year was witness to a similar inferno. It is unknown if the exact stump the culture was collected from survived the trial by fire, but regardless I’m grateful for the opportunity to keep them safe and sound in captivity. This is a large sand roach compared to other western species, which tend to have adult females under 20 millimeters. Nymphs are quite colorful and look like little pale lemon drops and gain more red as they grow.
