2/3/2021: More red-legged grasshoppers abound!
The last week has been a real blur here with the heaviest shipping load I’ve ever had. A big thank you to everyone for enabling me to do what I love to the extent I have!
Circling back around to why we’re all here (the bugs), the Melanoplus femurrubrum egg cup I wrote an earlier blog post about has continued to shock and surprise. Upon setting it directly in front of one of my many basement heaters (the safest place for anything remotely flammable) I bore witness to repeated additional waves of egg hatchings. Somehow those two decrepit females were able to produce hundreds of eggs during their short time here and these are the fruits of their labors. I’m excited about the prospects of using this extremely common native species as a feeder and if I can get a good number to adulthood expect to see them up on the site soon.
