The giant, overt, and clumsy lubber grasshopper is a friend to entomologists and foe to gardeners of the southeastern United States. Bright colors and a care-free nature signal to predators that a noxious chemical cocktail lurks beneath the lubber’s deceptive appearance. As pets, these insects are very easy to maintain if their large appetite for vegetation and need for a warm basking light are met. They are excellent for handling as they are not inclined to jump, and amusing to watch as the males meticulously court the females. This color strain is encountered through the Florida peninsula onto the panhandle and some adjacent areas. Across the rest of the eastern lubber’s range, numerous equally eye-catching varieties can be found, all with similar care. Roach Crossing’s lubber grasshoppers are 100% captive bred stock, long-lived, and free of parasitoids. Due to the intricacies and inconsistencies of grasshopper ova incubation, please contact Roach Crossing for updates on grasshopper availability.
