Feather millipedes are small, quirky millipedes with a disjunctive species distribution in temperate eastern Asia, coastal western North America, and the Appalachian mountains. They can be found under bark in groups as large as 100 individuals and are considered one of the few social millipede species as they congregate to feed. Their bodies are extremely flat allowing them to fit under tight bark in search of their favorite food: mycelium. Males will coil their bodies around eggs to protect them and can be such overeager fathers that they will even grab parts of clutches from other males and care for them!
