I do not know anyone who has not played with a roly-poly at some point in their lives. These durable crustaceans are found in a wide variety of human-influenced environments, but they are generally found in drier spots than other isopods. As their name suggests, they can roll up into a ball; this is effective at both preventing predators from attacking them (especially ants) and also at reducing their surface area allowing them to conserve water more easily. They are hardy and make excellent clean-up crew members for reptiles and amphibians, and many larger animals will munch on them occasionally.
