The large milkweed bug has long been coveted as a feeder for extremely picky eaters, particularly some chameleons and dart frogs. In the wild, its diet of milkweed seeds and sap renders it toxic to predators as evidenced by its bright warning colors. However, within several generations in captivity the species can be switched to consuming harmless food items such as raw sunflower seeds, rendering it a colorful, squishy, and appetizing meal. They are very prolific and hardy but need to be kept warm and well-ventilated to encourage breeding and growth.
