This cultivar was the source of much controversy in the isopod community. Simply put, “Spottergeist” is caused by the same mutation that causes the “White Out” line to lack dark pigment; however, it originated in a pure colony of “Dalmatian”, which is completely unrelated to the line which gave rise to “White Out”. Occasionally some individuals will show spooky lavender spotting and pinkish eyes; this is probably due to variation in the extent of the underlying “Dalmatian” patterning as is commonly seen in that line.  Compared to pure “White Out”, the adult coloration of this variety is a crisper white and does not yellow with age. In the above image, the isopod cultivars in order from top to bottom are “Dalmatian”, “Spottergeist”, and “White Out”.
2/21/2022: Multiple test crosses have confirmed that these are definitively white out dalmatians. F1 virgin “Spottergeist” to pure “Dalmatian” stock crosses consistently produce a regular dalmatian phenotype, in line with the original predictions.
