Spider beetles are bizarre inhabitants of abandoned animal nests and untouched, dusty corners of human ones. Their prominent antennae look like an extra set of legs, and coupled with their compacted head and thorax segments give them an eight-legged, spidery appearance. When disturbed, they will tuck their appendages in and play dead; it can be very amusing to see dozens of them curl up and drop off a piece of bark. The shine on their elytra is quite eye-catching, particularly when adults are piled up together. The larvae eat their food source from the inside out and use a silk-like material to patch up holes in their dual purpose food-houses. Although spider beetles can be household pests, they are unlikely to be found in most homes as their slow-moving nature leaves them vulnerable to modern cleaning devices and their fused wing-cases prevent flight. Some small predators, particularly toads, find them delicious.
