Oniscus asellus is the largest isopod currently available, though the great canyon isopod attains a larger average adult size. I have found several individuals in the field that were at least an inch long! This species is fairly long-lived, but it is not as prolific as others. They are often found under bark on dead logs or around wooden fence posts in gardens and compost piles. Like other isopods, they are not picky at all about what they’ll munch on; I have even seen mine eating fuzzy mold off of fish pellets, which is something I have not seen roaches do!
