Isolated and refined by Roach Crossing.

In the last 5 years numerous single-gene mutations have been isolated in many isopod species. Selective breeding is not always a straight-forward task, however, and persistence and care is needed to achieve certain characteristics. Roach Crossing’s “Caramel” Porcellio laevis are the result of over 7 years of selective breeding for pleasantly orange-tinted hues from a few individuals originating from wild California smooth isopods. Unlike Porcellio laevis “Orange” this is not a single gene characteristic; in fact, “Caramel” cannot reproduce with either “Orange” or “Dairy Cow”!
