In 2016 Dan Greiner at Limberlost Exotics began selecting for these unique hissers from his colony of pure Gromphadorhina portentosa. Reportedly the project started as an attempt for solid brown females but with additional selection and constant improvements, the adults have become more brightly colored. Solid red-orange covers much of the females’ bodies with the pronotum bearing rich mahogany tones. Males are just as striking but their pronota are darker with intriguing maroon markings in suspiciously similar places as those found in the distantly related glowspot roaches in the genus Lucihormetica. Perhaps over time a solid red or orange strain could be created with diligent selection!
