The ornate velvet roach is a colorful species that loves heat and humidity. Adult males have peculiarly long, waspy wings, while the females are wingless and resemble nymphs. The tiny nymphs are an awkward orange color with a tear drop of black on their abdomen but eventually grow into a stunning black body color with a blobbed orange-yellow contour. They often congregate together, enhancing their warning coloration signal as a group; when scared, they simultaneously emit a sharp, artificial-smelling defensive odor.
